Infographic: Fostering coordination to implement Uganda's Digital Transformation Roadmap

The all-African panel that took place at the e-Governance Conference 2023 brought into the spotlight country cases of digital transformation from the continent. An enlightening sessions, where everyone attending – both online and offline – got a unique chance to hear, at a glance, the most salient developments in digital taking place in Uganda and Namibia, among others.

In this episode of the Digital Government Podcast, we host one of the speakers of that session – Dr. Amina Zawedde. As the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance of Uganda, we discuss the status of digital transformation in the country, priorities, and the next steps on their journey.

Across the African continent, governments are investing in digitalisation to foster economic growth and development for all. Despite multiple challenges such as limited connectivity (the latest data indicates that only one-third of Africa’s population is online) and even electricity, some countries are benefitting from leapfrogging and the adoption of digital innovations to provide more effective public services and create opportunities for citizens.

Access to education is a fundamental human right at the heart of the SDGs. National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) are leaping barriers to education in the African world through e-learning. They provide higher education establishments and research centers with affordable and reliable connectivity and services. Thanks to lower connectivity prices and user-dedicated services, they help schools, vocational centers, and universities provide a better experience and foster more opportunities for their students.

The TTE Sandbox is a one-stop portal for distance learning in Uganda's National Teachers' Colleges (NTCs) and Vocational Training Institutes (VTIs). In this case study, we look into the elements that allowed this innovation to support distance learning and answer the needs that arose from school closures during the COVID-19 pandemic.
